One of the prominent roles performed by domesticated dogs is to guard their owners and their belongings against unwanted people. Research conducted in 2021 revealed that about 33 % of the population own a dog in the UK.

During a survey in France, a company asked: if we introduce an animal guard service, would you like to take it? About 59 percent of the respondents nodded in yes.

Some owners prefer dogs for their security, and others choose to protect their property. Dogs also proved effective in reducing predation of other domestic animals like sheep.

Let’s review five breeds that can be helpful if you are considering choosing a guard.

Bullmastiff:

The bullish look of the Bullmastiff combined with agility, tracking, and carting abilities make it intimidating for the intruders. However, they are generally adaptable to the living situation and can even manage to live in apartments. Its friendly behavior with family makes it a good companion.

Bullmastiff has inborn protector skills, but early training is necessary to reinforce its instincts.

German Shepherd:

A behavior test on German shepherds revealed the traits Self Confidence, temperament, nerve stability, defense, and fighting instincts. It is well known as a military and police dog and is extremely protective for owners.

Training is necessary depending upon whether you will take its services in search and rescue operations or you are looking for your security. The average lifespan of this breed is 7 to ten years.

Boxer:

The muscular boxer was the leading breed of 2020 in the UK. Strong jaws and square muzzle look intimidating, but it is not very aggressive by nature. They are easy to train and are friendly to children. Due to their protective nature, they can prove an excellent companion to a blind person. With an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years, a boxer can be a good choice as a watchdog.

Doberman Pinscher:

A long head, compact size, and medium height, Doberman Pinscher is one of the best dog breeds and can be a good running companion. A little formal training is enough, but you can enhance its protection skills with structured training. This breed is sensitive to cold. Therefore, proper protection is required in cold weather. The average life duration of Doberman Pinscher is 10–14 years.

Rottweiler:

Rottweilers stood second most popular breed in the United Kingdom. Due to their intelligence, they are one of the best choices in the police investigation and military operations. Its protective behavior towards cattle makes it an ideal family pet.

It is aggressive to strangers. Proper training, light exercise, and socialization are necessary to get the desired results. The average life expectancy of Rottweiler is about 9 to 10 years.

The Bottom Line:

A well-trained guard dog is much better than a fence or an alarm security system. But buying your favorite breed is not enough; it’s a responsibility. If a dog guards you, treat it like a member of your home, and you will get a loving and loyal companion.
